How Can I Get a Debt Consolidation Loan?

Traditional debt consolidation loans are offered by banks and credit unions. In order to get a debt consolidation loan, consumers will generally need to have a good credit history and often be willing to grant the lender security over an asset such as a home or vehicle. Because debt consolidation loans are used to simplify finances and manage debts, people often have difficulties qualifying for a traditional consolidation loan because their credit score has been impacted by carrying high credit card balances or they already hold a considerable mortgage.

Debt consolidation can also be achieved through methods besides a consolidation loan, options such as credit counselling programs can effectively combine debts into a manageable monthly payment, and Consumer Proposals can consolidate debts, stop future interest AND get a portion of the debts forgiven (written off).

How Do I Qualify for a Consumer Proposal?

Because Consumer Proposals are a unique legal debt consolidation tool offered by Licensed Insolvency Trustees that do not involve any further borrowing or extension of credit lending, they are very easy to qualify for. If you are an individual who owes more than $1,000 and you can afford a partial repayment on your overall debts, a Consumer Proposal may be an option for you.

Consumer Proposals most often offer your creditors a portion of the balance you owe, without interest – it’s common to repay as little as 20-50% of your debts, in full settlement.

How Can I File for Bankruptcy?

In Canada individuals and businesses are not able to declare bankruptcy by themselves. If bankruptcy is a debt solution you are considering, you can get bankruptcy help from a Licensed Insolvency Trustee – we are the sole debt professional legally authorized and endorsed by the Federal Government to offer advice on and solutions for managing debt.

The first step in filing bankruptcy is to meet with a Licensed Insolvency Trustee to talk about your situation. We’ll help you assess your debts and whether there are any other viable options to solve your financial challenges. If bankruptcy is the best option, we’ll work with you throughout the entire process. Once you officially start the bankruptcy process you will get immediate relief from your debts and can exit bankruptcy debt-free as little as nine months later in most cases.
